What is the paleo diet?

What is the Paleo Diet? Caveman diet?

I’ve been dipping my toe in new diets, as you know reviewing things has become a new hobby of mine. Opening a new packet or box and having those initial reactions is just the best feeling. Initially I was weary. I’ve always thought of paleo as a ‘Low-Carb’ diet and not given it much thought but after reading all of the ‘I CUT CARBS’ and ‘I CUT SUGAR’ articles it made me want to try a new drastic diet, so paleo here I go.

Off on my little foodie adventure!

I did my research before jumping in, something I recommend before anyone takes on a new diet.
Find out what foods you can eat and can’t eat (below) and then write a list of your favourite meals at the moment and find replicas to replace those with, so it doesn’t feel too much too soon.

For me, this diet is of course this is more personal than professional. I have my first weeks thoughts which is a great starter base if you want to understand paleo in simpler terms. Then I also wrote “Things they didn’t tell you about paleo” It throws some great positives and a few negatives into the mix, something to think about. I’m still not affiliated with them but as you can tell I love the paleo lifestyle, I’m hoping I can teach you enough about it to at least encourage you to swap a few carbohydrates out into paleo style.

What is the Paleo diet?
I talk about this a lot here but there’s a lot of misconceptions about the word so I want to explain it a bit more. It’s not a ‘low-carb’ diet,The paleo diet least we forget is essentially the ‘basic’ human fuel diet. For thousands of years we had no way of combining grains and fats to create foods that we have today, those foods are now stuffed full of saturates, salt sugar and tonnes of chemicals.

It’s becoming more and more popular as trendy new ‘lifestyle’ changes are popping up, this is not really a traditional diet as the participants will continue it on as a lifestyle change rather than a short burst.

*This diet is just saying “don’t eat non-man made food”, yes there are purists out there who won’t have even olive oil (even though it’s essentially pure) and they won’t have corn because of the high sugar contents, but that’s their choice.

It essentially cleans your body from any fats, sugars and toxins. Since you’re cutting out processed foods and sugars and are introducing more veggies and proteins, your body is burning off the protein fats and your bodies fats, which aiding muscle recovery and supplementing your body with natural vitamins and endorphins.

As you’re eating fibrous and protein-rich natural foods it’s hard to over-eat,But a girl can try, so, that means you’ll have more energy throughout your day and you’ll be consuming less fat.

Did you know most athletes and models are on a paleo diet, since they want physically fit bodies they need protein to burn fat and build muscle this means a healthy diet which for most people means reducing calories.

What Can I eat on the Paleo Diet?
You can eat a variety of ‘natural’ foods. Make it from scratch so to speak. Foods that you’d have found 200 years ago is the basis I go from, as explained on the website it’s about making the digestion of foods easier, as it should be. Our bodies are now so full of fats and processed foods they’re working harder to digest such foods. So the diet implements a range of foods such as; Meats, Sea Food, Fresh Fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts.

It’s essentially a ‘Basic’ Diet, no processed foods or dairy (as a rule) and no gluten (Gluten-free ready meals are still a no-no). For a full list and meal-plan on the paleo diet I have found an amazing website through the medium of Pinterest (what don’t they have?).
Recipes and Food Guides.
Firstly let me promo-myself a bit here I have a recipe section dedicated to paleo meals as a year on, I’m still following the paleo lifestyle, It has completely changed my life. I have so much more time dedicated to cooking tasty meals instead of working hard in the gym! (Meal plans for 1 week)

If you’re interested in the Paleo diet I have a board for paleo meals on Pinterest. Then there’s the amazing, Paleo GrubsThe website– is a blog explaining how to live on the paleo lifestyle has a day-by-day recipe guide for Healthy Breakfasts, Energising lunches and Filling dinners. They explain what foods you should eat, how you should cook them and why they’re good for you, for energising or for filling you up after a workout ect.

Pinterest, Always has healthy recipes and guides for weight loss, so why not search for ‘Paleo recipes’ or ‘paleo breakfasts’ to get yourself started. A lot of bloggers will have stunning pictures and recipes for such an occasion.
*May 2015: I have recently tried implementing the paleo lifestyle, but failed after two days, carbs just have that sort of hold on me. I will start again beginning June 1st and will update the site from then on.
January YUP! 9 months later and I’m 3″ smaller and I have so much more time and energy! Love it. My site is now update with new recipes all for the paleo lifestyle.

People that eat paleo (Cave men) What are they?

Sweet potatos, salad and chicken for lunch. August 2015

Paleo can also be changed in several ways, you have purists that don’t eat grains, corn, high GI foods (inc potatoes and beans) and really stick to eating and cooking naturally, no ice creams or pancakes, no matter what they’re made from. The purists I’d call cavemen, they eat purely and barely cook their food, like cavemen.

The casual cavemen, they eat as pure as possible but won’t necessarily use cavemen ways of going about things, cooking things in natural oils, like olive oil. They tend to combine ingredients more and make more soups and natural-breakfast bars, new innovative recipes.
ButternutS.Pancakes August 2015.

The modern-Paleo’s, I’m calling them this because they use modern technology to combine all of the natural ingredients and use new processes (not traditional to the diet) to create healthy alternatives to food groups, such as paleo pancakes** and cakes. The modern paleo’s tend to do it part-time too. Any change is a good change.

Why go paleo?

Many diets are either Low Carb, Low Fat or Low sugar. This diet is a mixture of all three but with no restrictions, As long as it isn’t a ‘Junk’ food it’s full steam ahead. So, you’ve learnt about paleo, but why is better than other diets?

Low Carb diets

By cutting carbs in similar diets you cut out many of the filling food groups which makes you hungry and crave more food throughout the day, it can either put you into hunger mode, make your hormones go crazy and..well, it’s hard to do! We all have potatoes, pasta, and carb fueled diets. Low carb sucks…usually, but when you replace it with new-style cooking, introducing new ways of cooking vegetables you’ll be a new person.

Low Fat/Sugar diets
Cauliflower rice and vegetarian chilli con carne! (June.2015)

Fat is a necessary evil, our brains and bodies need fat to survive, if we don’t have enough then our body goes into overdrive and it makes us want fats and sugars (normally the only thing to hand is processed junk food) So they’re out of the window.

Paleo allows for Fats in the forms of meats fish, eggs and nuts.

Paleo allows for Carbs in the forms of White rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes and ‘healthy bread’ (Made with organic flours, coconut and almond flour)7 months on from starting the Paleo diet: It’s easy, tasty and it makes you feel better, No other ‘diet’ has made me feel like this. I have more energy, I love the flavours of my food and I love that everyone’s jealous of ‘how well I eat’. It has made me able to cut out exercise completely, because..I don’t need to. I have abs now, without having to workout. It’s insane! Remember, you can follow me on Instagram too for all my foodie/personal updates. @PurelyAmy

I’m not sponsored or endorsed by the paleo diet.co, I just believe that cutting out sugars and processed foods is the best way to go with healthy eating. I have included some product links to their website.

I think paleo diet might a good healthy choice for some but I personally prefer not to put restrictions on what to eat but to make a smart choices when it comes to picking my foods.

    • 19/05/2016 / 11:30 am

Well isn’t a smart choice a restriction? You’re restricting yourself from making silly meals, which is essentially paleo.

I didn’t know you were paleo? I really believe in it’s principles- good clean eating- but it’s difficult to stick to!

    • 19/05/2016 / 8:58 am

Yeah, It’s my go-to diet when I feel rough or need to lose weight..I’m not strict with it at all but I make conscious choices for my main meal and my breakfast. Lunch is just a free for all in all honesty.

I actually thought the paleo diet was a lot more restrictive than this, plus a diet that actually makes you feel better is probably one that I should try! xx

Great post, I’ve been meaning to look into this diet so glad you wrote about it. Looks like I have been heading that way naturally myself recently.

I wish I had your conviction to stick to a diet like this, I am such a bad eater. I don’t like most healthy options and therefore my diet is full of junk and processed crap. I try to avoid going too bad but I have no willpower against chocolate, sweets and booze. I have to start by slowly cutting down on the extremely bad

    • 19/05/2016 / 8:50 am

I sneak in coffee’s a weekly treat and a daily portion of dark chocolate (I’m a huge sugar addict) but for savoury foods I’m really strict with myself. cutting down is hard but do it slow and often, you’ll eventually forget what your old diet was.

I know a few people that have tried this diet. It’s not for me but I can see how you could work certain aspects of it into wyour meal plans to follow it loosely.

I had no idea that most athletes and models were on a paleo diet! I thought this was quite a rare thing but apparently not.. The food options do look really healthy so I’d definitely be up for trying this out for a healthier lifestyle šŸ™‚

YUP! Have a look in to the Victoria secret models, they workout for hours everyday to build muscle.

I’d say you’ve given a really good indication of what a paleo lifestyle involves. I rather like the sound of it (but would have to incorporate some typical cakes in my diet too). These are all the types of food that I encourage my athlete daughter to include in her meals.

    • 18/05/2016 / 2:47 pm

Girl, I’ve got you covered with cake. Go into my paleo section, it’s literally just sugary foods. If you eat sweet things in a natural form I.E Banana pancakes or banana bread you’ll be fine..it’s just store bought treats that are a no-no really x

This was so interesting to read! I always thought Paleo was literally just another way to say “low carb” or I don’t eat carbs! Great to know!

Cutting out sugars is one thing that I really need to do for myself. I am quite bad at it and not been successful in the past. I do want to try out paleo diet but I need to read more.

Oh, this is better than I thought! I thought paleo was just low carb. Though I’d struggle as I get a lot of protein from dairy as I’m a veggie.

Have you got a recipe for the cauliflower rice and veggie chilli? I have heard friends cite the benefits of the Paelo diet but I am not sure if it would be for me. I want to eat food that will make me feel better but at the same time I need to put weight on too.
