We all love a bit of an experiment in the kitchen, me more than most…
I hate going food shopping, vegetables are heavy and fresh veg doesn’t last long so I have to go frequently or I end up with nothing left.
[Camera pans to Amy in the Kitchen on Saturday Evening]
Gott a love a dramatic faux-camera pan. So, I was stood there in my kitchen and there was nothing in. I was left with 2 carrots half a floret of broccoli, 2 eggs and some diced onion. I fiddled with the idea of an omelette but I eat a fair few eggs already and I didn’t think my stomach could handle another batch of eggs so, to the internet it was! Where would we be without it, eh? I know I’d be curled up in the corner with a box of eggs because I’m lazy and I hate shopping so eating eggs would be my only way to survive.
Sorry sorry, back to the carrots.
Anyone who’s been here before will know I’m a complete psychopath for carrots and sweet potatoes but since I keep splurging on sweet potatoes I thought it best not to include them at all. I found a super easy hot dog idea, it literally is just a carrot in place of the meat, roasted in barbeque sauce! If you do it on a smokey grill it tastes beyond amazing!
Too simple to be tasty? Perhaps, but it was worth a try.
- Four Large, Carrots
- *Mixed spices; Paprika, Cumin, Garamasala, Garlic, Tomato paste, Chilli.
- - Final touches
- Four Hot dog rolls
- Salad,
- chopped onions,
- sauces
- Preparing the carrots, Chop the top and tail off of the carrots and place into a pan of boiling water.
- Cook for 20 minutes for a carrot-dog that is around 1" in circumference, so if it's thinner just cook it for less!
- Once boiled coat the dog in your spices or sauce and either cook under a grill for 5-10 minutes or pierce with a skewer and stick it on the barbie!
- *Mixed spices, Pre packed spices or just a barbeque sauce you may already have!
YEP YEP YEP. Sign me up!
I shouldn’t say it but shocked me how tasty this was! Let alone simple but, It’s a carot…and It didn’t taste like one? It was sweet, spicy and soft. It definitely impressed me, I’m not saying it had a meat texture, it didn’t but it was firm and soft like those cheap American hot dogs you can buy.
As always, I test my recipes on my ever fussy twin brother. He lives off box meals, cereal and the remains of my healthy food. Honestly, he’s nothing like me at all, which makes his tastes buds as ‘normal’ as the general public. A perfect candidate.
“They’re nice, I mean..they’re not hotdogs but If you’re looking for something healthy that tastes alright, I could eat it. I’d eat one again anyway”
That’s a win for me, he loves my apple, blueberry and walnut crumbles. My home made pasta sauces and veggie curries, My American pancakes (but who wouldn’t?) but I’m yet to get him round to my courgette spag bol. Either way, though, anything that he’d eat again is a winner. He’ll turn down a Sunday dinner if it doesn’t taste right so he has a very fussy palette!
My only issue was that the barbeque sauce struggled to stay on the ‘dog’ I think If I’d have roughed up the edges with a grater or something similar then it would’ve held on well. In the end, I just added more barbeque sauce to the dog itself so the flavour was on the bun and on each mouthful.
*My shop-bought Barbeque sauce from Holland & Barrett (affiliate link!) and love most products of theirs. I hope you will too! 🙂

Wow! I love carrots and hotdog. So they can actually go together. Haha. This is a perfect alternative indeed. Also for not using the white bread as the bun.:)

Nice recipe for vegetarians! I never thought of a carrot instead of a sausage, I have to try it.

This is really interesting, I never thought of trying something like this, but I will. I try to have more vegan meals in my diet (I’m vegetarian) and I love this idea.
I hope you do give it a try, I know it sounds strange but its one of those things you have to try before you understand it 🙂

I LOVE THIS IDEA! I’m so going to try this next time I’m at a BBQ. Being a veggie at a BBQ is hard work ha.

Thank you!! See you can just boil these up and whack them on the grill with some sauce. I love them really charred up with some mustard! 🙂

These sound really interesting and I would have never of thought to make hot dogs out of carrots!
Me neither, I’d always thought of carrots as a bulk. Something relatively flavourless but nutricious. Add flavour to is and you have a great textured bulker instead!

Haha! What a funny, unique idea; I’m glad they proved to be a hit.

Wow Amy, that looks really nice, I think my husband would love this. He eats meat but not much of it. You have inspired me today 😉
Thank you Melissa, I have to admit with the picture I’ve given It’s not much to go by but it really is a great supplement!
