Super healthy, super cheap Homemade Museli!

makeyourownmuseli

Whether it’s Autumn or spring, we all love a good breakfast!

For me, that means something sweet.

A hearty plate of gf pancakes or..even better a big bowl of Museli. It doesn’t come cheap, though, does it? With a £6 price tag on even a basic range of the good stuff and a hefty portion of sugar and fat to boot. It makes this breakfast more of a luxury treat than a healthier alternative. So what can we do about that?

With a typical bag of Muesli, you have no control over the fruit and nut content of your cereal. With this quick and budget friendly recipe,  you are able to create your own flavour combinations and a nutritional boost! Listing the ingredients I recommend, It’s up to you what you put into yours.

_____

A versatile base recipe that will withstand any mixture of ingredients, to create a unique balance of flavours for each taste preference. Not to mention the health benefits of creating your own cereal. Cut out the added sugar and add in your own nutritional boost!

Oats
Wheat (weet bix)
Nuts : Hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, walnuts, pistachios, almonds, macadamia nuts, cashews.
Fruit: Raisins, currants, Citrus peel, blueberries, raspberries, red currants, cranberries.

2 cups of oats
6 wheet-abix’s (around 2 cups)
1/2 a cup of crushed nuts
3/4 a cup of mixed fruit
Combine together and enjoy. For an easy and budget friendly boost you could try Holland & Barrets ready made seeds and cranberry mix for only £1. Remember, a portion should only be 2-3 tablespoons!

I use non-branded cereal’s. Wheetbisks and own brand oats coming in at less than £3 for both! This portion seemed to last me for 3 weeks, so around 15 portions. Mix up the flavour combinations or try one of my suggestions.

Why not try:

A walnut combination:
With walnuts being high in fats that promote brain health a walnut mix seems perfect to start the day. Low in fat and sugar. Walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts. Raisins & orange zest.

Feeling blue:
With walnuts being high in fats I try to introduce them to all of my muesli’s and this one isn’t an exception. I’m adding blueberries to this as they’re great in antioxidants too. Low in fat and sugar. Walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts. Raisins & orange zest & topped with blueberries.

Mix it up with fresh fruit:
Whatever fruit and nut combination you enjoy, top it with blueberries, bananas or sliced apple!

A Christmassy affair:
Try this one with hot milk and a dash of cinnamon to get you in the Christmas spirit! Crushed brazil nuts (only 1 or 2), almonds, hazelnuts. Raisins, orange zest & cranberries and a dash of cinnamon in your hot milk!

Traditional Alpen at £4 a bag (1.5kg) vs homemade muesli (walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts. Raisins & orange zest) which comes in at £2.58 for the same amount! Not to mentioned the reduced sugars and added bonus of creating your own recipes! oatsnutritionalm
